Arcana Academy opens with Clara Graysword, a thief and illegal tarot-card inker whose failed job earns her a life sentence. Prince Kaelis, the academy's secretive headmaster, offers her a way out. She must help him steal a powerful card from the king and pose as both a first-year student and his bride-to-be.

The strongest element is Clara herself. She is observant, capable, loyal, and wary enough to question every bargain. Kaelis remains hard to read, which gives their reluctant alliance real tension. Their attraction develops slowly alongside the political maneuvering, betrayals, and questions surrounding Clara's family.

The early chapters spend considerable time teaching the rules of the magic and the academy, so the pace can feel measured. That foundation pays off in a rapid final stretch, followed by a cliffhanger that leaves major loyalties unresolved.

Readers who enjoy dark academia, magical schools, enemies-to-allies tension, and romance that develops gradually should find plenty to like here.
