“The relationship is most convincing when Ambrose's certainty meets Cal's slower work of trusting herself.”
📖 Truly, Madly, Deeply by L.J. Shen Rating 4.25/5
Cal Litvin returns to a complicated friendship and an old crush on Ambrose Casablancas, her former best friend's older brother. Ambrose is a celebrated chef opening a new restaurant, and his controlled professional life clashes with Cal's anxious, openhearted manner.
The pairing draws energy from grumpy-and-sunshine contrast, long familiarity, and the fact that Ambrose falls first. Cal's grief and self-doubt are treated as ongoing parts of her life rather than obstacles that vanish once the romance begins. Ambrose's intensity creates strong chemistry, though his possessiveness may divide readers.
The restaurant plot, family conflict, and stalker thread give the couple pressures beyond their attraction. At times the language pushes the emotion so hard that quieter scenes would have helped, but the relationship remains engaging.
This is a contemporary best-friend's-brother romance with a chef hero, slow-building attraction, grief, anxiety, and high emotional intensity. It begins the Forbidden Love series and can also be read as a complete story.
